UV-Resistant 3D Filaments for Florida: ASA vs PETG-CF Buyer’s Guide
In Florida, the wrong 3D printing filament fails fast. PLA yellows, warps, and cracks under direct Miami sun within a few months. ABS handles UV better but warps during printing without a closed enclosure. The right answer depends on what the part has to do — load, exposure, flex, salt — and on how much surface finish matters. This guide walks through the four filaments we use at Custom3Dmodel for Florida-grade work, when to pick each, and why.
The Florida Stress Test
Three environmental factors define material choice in South Florida:
- UV intensity: Miami receives more UV-A and UV-B annually than most of the continental US. UV cracks bonds in cheaper polymers.
- Humidity and salt: Coastal moisture and aerosolized salt accelerate hydrolysis and surface degradation.
- Heat cycling: Parked-car interiors reach 70 °C+; glass transition matters.
ASA — The Florida Default for Outdoor Use
ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is the FDM equivalent of marine vinyl. It is engineered for direct sun and weather exposure. Key specs:
- Heat deflection: ~95 °C
- UV resistance: excellent
- Surface finish: smooth, paintable
- Best for: outdoor brackets, marine accessories, exterior signage, automotive parts
ASA requires a 240–260 °C nozzle, 100 °C bed, and a closed enclosure to avoid warping — exactly what our Bambu Lab printers deliver out of the gate.
PETG-CF — Stiffness With Carbon Fiber
PETG-CF adds chopped carbon fiber to the PETG base, raising stiffness and dimensional stability dramatically while keeping printing accessible. Use it when:
- The part is a clamp, bracket, or fixture that needs to resist flex
- You need higher temperature resistance than plain PETG (~85 °C heat deflection)
- Surface texture is acceptable (carbon fiber gives a matte, slightly rough finish)
PETG-CF is abrasive — it eats brass nozzles. Our hardened steel nozzles handle it without wear.
PA-CF (Nylon-Carbon) — Engineering-Grade Load Bearing
When the part has to carry real load — vibration mounts, threaded inserts, mechanical hardware — we move to PA-CF. Properties:
- Tensile strength: ~70 MPa
- Heat deflection: ~140 °C
- Stiffness: very high
- Downside: hygroscopic, must be dried before printing; cost is higher ($50-100+/kg)
TPU — When You Need Flex
Not every Florida part needs to be rigid. Gaskets, dampers, grip pads, and protective sleeves want elasticity. TPU 90A and 95A give you Shore-A flex with UV resistance better than rubber. We use TPU for marine grommets, drone-landing pads, and shock-absorbing brackets.
What to Avoid in Florida
Three filaments we generally will not recommend for Florida outdoor use:
- PLA / PLA+: Looks great new, fails within months in sun. Fine for indoor decor or short-term prototypes.
- Standard ABS: Decent UV, but emits fumes during printing and warps without closed enclosure. ASA is a clear upgrade.
- Standard PETG: Holds up well indoors and in moderate sun, but yellows over 12+ months outside. Acceptable for awnings and partial-shade use; for full sun, step up to ASA.
