3D Printing for Art Basel Miami: Large-Scale Art Installations & Displays

Every December, Art Basel turns Miami into the most concentrated contemporary art market in the Americas. For exhibiting artists, galleries, and producers, the weeks before the fair are a logistics test — custom mounting systems, sculpture armatures, gallery fixtures, and bespoke display elements all need to exist physically by load-in day. 3D printing solves the speed-and-customization problem that traditional fabrication cannot. At Custom3Dmodel we have been producing Art Basel work locally in Miami for years, and the workflow is built for the fair’s specific constraints.

Why 3D Printing Fits Art Basel’s Reality

Art Basel work is high-stakes, low-tolerance, and unforgiving on timeline. Three things matter:

  • Each piece is unique. No tooling. No mold runs. 3D printing is geometry-as-code, which means each piece can be unique without extra cost.
  • Lead times collapse near load-in. Local production in Miami removes 3–5 days of shipping. We can produce a complex 30-cm component in 24 hours.
  • Finishes matter. Sanded ASA, painted PETG, and matte PA-CF all read as gallery surface — not as plastic.

What We Produce for Art Basel

Recurring requests during Art Basel season:

  • Sculpture armatures and bases: Custom geometries for unique works, sized and engineered for the artwork’s center of gravity.
  • Mounting systems: Hidden brackets and wall fixtures that disappear behind the work.
  • Plinth and pedestal hardware: Adjustable feet, leveling fixtures, cable management.
  • Modular display elements: Booth fixtures designed to break down and travel.
  • Replacement parts for shipping damage: Pieces that did not survive transit, recreated from photos before opening day.
  • Bespoke gallery branding: Logos, signage, and decorative trim in matched gallery finishes.

Working at Art Basel Scale

Single-piece envelopes on our printers are 256×256×256 mm, but most Art Basel work exceeds that. The standard approach: split the part into print-ready sections, produce each, chemically bond at joints, finish the seam invisibly. Done right, the joint is invisible to gallery viewers and structurally as strong as the original part.

For massive installations we coordinate batch production across multiple printers in parallel — a 2-meter element split into eight sections can be in your hands in 72 hours.

  • ASA: Default for outdoor-adjacent or partial-light installations. Stable, paintable, smooth-finishable.
  • PETG / PCTG: When transparency or translucency matters — back-lit elements, glowing forms.
  • PA-CF: Sculpture armatures and load-bearing internal structures.
  • PLA+: Acceptable for interior, climate-controlled gallery displays where longevity is not critical.

Out of the printer, ASA shows faint layer lines. Galleries do not want that. The standard finishing pipeline we apply:

  • Sanding to 400–800 grit
  • Filler primer (1–2 coats)
  • Color base coat in matched finish
  • Optional matte, satin, or high-gloss clear top coat

The result is indistinguishable from machined or molded plastic at gallery viewing distance.

Art Basel Timeline: When to Engage Us

  • 6 months out: Concept review for major installations. Material and engineering feasibility.
  • 3 months out: Prototype iteration. Test the form, weight, and visual read.
  • 1 month out: Production of final pieces.
  • 1 week out: Replacement parts and last-minute additions.
  • 24 hours out: Emergency repairs from shipping damage. We have saved pieces this close to opening.

How to Work With Us

Most galleries and artists arrive with sketches and a deadline, not CAD files. That is fine. Our intake supports:

  • Sketches and reference images → we build the CAD
  • Existing model → we adapt, scale, or duplicate
  • Production-ready file → straight to print

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the largest piece you can produce? Single-piece up to 256 mm cube. Larger via split-and-bond — there is effectively no upper limit.

Can the surface look painted or natural? Yes. Our finishing pipeline gives gallery-grade results.

Can you sign NDAs for unreleased work? Yes. Standard for Art Basel-related projects.

Do you store CAD files securely? Yes, with role-based access and per-project encryption.
